The most famous is the extraordinary site at Angkor Wat, near Siemréab. During the war it was controlled by the Khmer Rouge, who threatened any visitors with attack. Visitors are now allowedin small numbers; 3,000 visited the site in 1993. Once basic intrastructure is in place and the political situation has stabilized, - Cambodia has considerable tourism potential. It currently attracts adventurous, independent travelers. Tourists are occasionally ldnapped.
